• piper comes to nico while he’s in the infirmary to ask him to teach her mythomagic
• really she’s just looking for an excuse to bond with nico and be his friend, but also mythomagic looks cool
• (frank is the one who told her nico used to play)
• and nico is like fuck my fucking life but nico has a chronic inability to say no to girls
• piper picks up mythomagic really well, to absolute no one’s surprise, and then she’s like, hey by the way have you ever played pokemon
• nico has heard of pokemon. there were a couple of kids in the lotus hotel who had cards, but it didn’t really blip on his radar because mythomagic
• piper doesn’t pull out the cards, though. piper unearths a couple of gameboy pockets and some copies of red and blue from the attic and just tells nico
• say hello to the nineties and say goodbye to the rest of your life
• (which kind of terrifies nico honestly but he is committed to friendship now)
• he picks bulbasaur as his starter
• sabrina is his pokemon idol he emulates her from the minute he meets her
• meanwhile, there is piper. piper.
• piper is one of those gamers who button mashes and plays entirely on instinct and yet is somehow a complete beast
• soon they get the entire camp (back) into pokemon, and annabeth is one of those players who has to do everything by the book
• annabeth makes charts of all of the vulnerabilities
• annabeth calculates damage and stat values in her head
• annabeth is a completionist
• half-blood hill has never seen a rivalry the likes of the chase-mclean pokemon tournament of 2011 and they probably never will again
• that summer reyna comes to visit and that’s when they all stop, drop, and realize
• reyna has never played pokemon in her life
• suddenly everyone is rushing to teach reyna pokemon
• and reyna is absolutely determined to DESTROY annabeth and piper
• this is really serious okay this is about camp honor
• ……….so she goes and practices with nico
• and nico is sworn to secrecy on all of her fuck-ups
• “you can never tell annabeth i forgot steel types are weak to ghost types” reyna tells nico
• "your secrets are always safe with me, reyna” nico promises back
